Deriving from personal knowledge and things learned on this site: http://www.dummies.com/how-to/content/understanding-the-origin-of-the-greek-gods.html, the Greek gods have very interesting heritage. While the focus is mainly on the Olympian gods (Zeus, Hades, Poseidon, etc.), we’ll start with the generation before Zeus. Zeus’ father, Cronos, was a titan. His mother, Rhea, was also a titan. These two had many children. Similar to Cronos’ father, Uranus, Cronos decided he did not want his kids to live. When every child was born, Cronos swallowed them whole. Finally, Rhea got tired of her kids being swallowed whole. When her final son was born, Rhea swapped her son with a sizable rock. She gave this rock to Cronos who, of course, swallowed it whole. Zeus was hidden away on the island of Crete. When Zeus was grown up, he sided with his grandmother, the titan Gaia, and attacked Cronos. Just as Cronos had done to Uranus, Zeus…
